ABOUT DISTRICT 5 ODP
The U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development, or ODP as
it is more commonly called, is a national identification and development
program for high-level players. The program identifies and develops youth
players throughout the country to represent their state associations,
regions and the United States in soccer competition.
ODP teams are formed at the state
association and regional levels, made up of the best players in various age
groups. At the state association level, pools of players are identified in
each eligible age group and brought together as a team to develop their
skills through training and competition. From the state pools, players are identified for regional and national pools and teams.
In order to
identify a pool of players in each age group from which a U.S. National Team
will be selected for international competition. ODP is a program designed to provide high-level
training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels.
Through the use of carefully selected licensed coaches, ODP also creates a mechanism
for the enhancement of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of
coaching.

I didn't
know about or go out for ODP until I was going into my
junior year of high school. In fact, I only tried out because some coaches in my area recommended that it
would be a good experience for me to play with quality players and
that it would be an opportunity to measure my talent. In that
spring, I tried out for and made the district team, the
state team and, then the regional team - all in a five-month span.
At each tryout I thought I wouldn't advance to the next
stage. Then, late that
same summer I got a call that I had been selected for the
youth national team. It was an amazing time that wouldn't have
happened if I didn't take the first step to participate in ODP.
That
first tryout has led to very special soccer experiences. Since
that time, I have played in the CONCACAF tournament qualifying
for a World Championship. I have played in the World University
Games. I have been a contracted member for our full national team at a time
when we didn't have a professional league. And in
part out of respect for the game and to give back to it, I
have coached for many years for the state ODP, regional ODP, and for
a youth national team.
My ODP experience helped make me the player and the coach I am today. The
opportunity to play with other quality players throughout my ODP
experience has been invaluable to my growth as a player."

"I
have great memories of my first experience with the Olympic
Development Program! It was my first time competing for a
position on a team without having my own father as the coach.
It was nerve racking waiting for that letter to arrive in the mail
announcing if I had made the ODP team or not!
I
was 13 years old and I can still distinctly remember that I had
a family dinner at a Chinese restaurant and inside my fortune cookie
it read "you will receive good news in the mail soon."
The
very next day I received the letter congratulating me on making the
U14 ODP Team. I still have that fortune in my soccer box
today! 3 district teams, 5 Regional, State and National Teams,
and 2 junior World Cups later I finally reached my dream - playing
in the 1992 Olympics in
Barcelona
Spain
.
Thanks ODP for getting me started." -- Troy Dayak
